Women's Basketball Falls To Ferrum In Conference Tournament

BANNER ELK – Ferrum picked up 24 points from the free throw line and made six three pointers to hold onto a 74-71 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Sunday evening inside Williams Gymnasium. 

The Braves (11-17) finish the season dropping their last four games. The victory for the Panthers (10-19) snapped a three-game skid and will now face Lees-McRae on Monday in the second round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game opened with Bre'Asia Washington scoring a layup for the Braves, giving them an early lead. Ferrum responded with Sofia Ponce's layup at 7:47, and the teams exchanged points, resulting in multiple ties and lead changes throughout the quarter. Taryn Blankenship and Breyana Kimmons each contributed to Ferrum's first-quarter performance with successful free throws and a 3-pointer, respectively. UNC Pembroke's Shaymiah Bailey capped the quarter with a layup at the buzzer as UNCP trailed 15-14.
2ND QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington's layup at 7:42 gave UNC Pembroke a 20-19 lead. Sofia Ponce pushed the Ferrum lead out to 32-23 with a free throw, but back-to-back three pointers from Natalie Evington moments later cut the UNCP deficit back to 34-31 with two minutes left in the half. The Panthers closed out the half on a 7-2 surge to hold a 41-33 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair's layup halfway through the period cut the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 46-41, but Ferrum answered with a triple to push its lead out to 49-41. The Panthers used an 8-2 run to extend their lead out to 57-43, but the Braves scored the final four points of the quarter to trail 57-47 heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
The Braves started the quarter on a 10-3 run to chip away at their deficit, 60-57 with 6:48 on the clock. A three-pointer from Anastasia Sinclair at 3:36 followed by a layup from Shaymiah Bailey gave UNCP a 67-64 advantage. Bre'Asia Washington made good on a layup with 26 second left in regulation to give UNCP a one-point lead, but Breyana Kimmons converted on a layup with eight seconds left to give the Panthers the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with a game-high 24 points on an 8-for-15 shooting night. The junior pulled down three defensive rebounds in 33 minutes of work.
+ Shaymiah Bailey flirted with a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
+ Anastasia Sinclair added 11 points after going 3-for-7 from the field. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.5 percent from the field, while Ferrum shot 40.7 percent from the floor.
+ The Panthers made six three pointers, while the Braves were held to just three.
+ Ferrum made good on 24-of-35 free throw attempts, while UNCP was 18-for-23 from the charity stripe. 
+ FC scored 17 points from 14 UNCP turnovers.
