Baseball Takes Series Opener Against Shorter

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke faced an early 3-1 deficit, but scored 11 unanswered runs on the way to a 14-3 win over Shorter in the series opener Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

Jacob Smith struck out a career-high 11 batters over seven complete innings to move to 4-1 on the season.

JD Scarbrough and Morgan Padgett each homered and drove in three runs to lead the offense. Hayden Davis chipped in with three RBI, as well.

The Braves (21-9, 13-6 CC) won the first ever meeting with the Hawks (11-17, 3-16 CC). 

The Black & Gold will be back in action Saturday as they close out the series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 4 Shorter took a 3-1 lead on Jonathan Vigoa's RBI double, with another run coming home on a UNCP error.
BOT 5 The Braves knotted the score at 3-3 as Ashton Donathan walked and came home on JD Scarbrough's two-run blast.
BOT 6 UNCP took the lead for good on Morgan Padgett's RBI hit by pitch, before Donathan followed with an RBI infield single. Scarbrough added an RBI walk, while Daniel Stephens made it 7-3 with a sac fly. Hayden Davis capped off the scoring with a two-RBI double to stretch the lead to 9-3.
BOT 7 The Braves tacked on a couple more runs as Peyton Young singled and jogged home on Padgett's two-run homer to make it 11-3.
