Hall Of Fame Selection Criteria

STUDENT-ATHLETE INDUCTEES
Any student-athlete who has competed for UNC Pembroke shall be eligible for consideration, provided that 10 years has passed since the completion of his or her eligibility. Graduation from UNC Pembroke is not required for election, but the student-athlete must have competed for UNCP for at least two full athletic seasons. The following criteria should be considered as a guide in electing outstanding student-athletes (not listed in order of importance):

1. Olympic medal winner or member of Olympic medal winning team
2. Individual or team national champion
3. Individual or team conference champion
4. World record holder
5. National record holder
6. Conference record holder
7. UNCP record holder
8. National team selection
9. All-America selection
10. First Team All-Conference selection
11. National or state hall of fame member
12. National player or coach of the year honor
13. Conference player of the year honor
14. Letterwinner in multiple sports
15. Academic All-America and Academic All-Conference honors
16. Distinguished post-University career in athletics, business or public service
TEAM, COACH AND/OR ADMINISTRATOR INDUCTEES
Only region and/or national championship teams (NAIA or NCAA) will be eligible for consideration, provided that 10 years has passed since the team captured its region or national championship. Any coach and/or administrator who has participated in UNC Pembroke athletics shall be eligible for consideration, provided that 10 years has passed since the completion of his or her duties. The following criteria should be considered as a guide in electing outstanding coaches and/or administrators (not listed in order of importance):

1. National or conference coach of the year
2. Multiple teams of distinction (National, conference, and/or district champions);
3. Most career wins in a sport at UNC Pembroke
4. Sustained and influential impact such as capital improvements and/or endowment increases
5. Distinguished post-University career in athletics, business or public/community service.
POSTHUMOUS INDUCTEES
Deceased individuals who have made unique and extraordinary contributions to the UNC Pembroke athletics program shall be eligible for election as a Posthumous Inductee. Posthumous Inductees may only include former student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff members. Eligibility as a Student-Athlete Inductee shall not disqualify an individual for consideration as a Posthumous Inductee. A maximum of two (2) nominees from this category may be elected in any year, and any Posthumous Inductee(s) will not be applied to or affect the maximum number of inductees in a respective Class. There is no expectation to choose a Posthumous Inductee every year.
SPECIAL INDUCTEES
Any individual, living or deceased, who has made unique and extraordinary contributions to the UNC Pembroke athletics program, shall be eligible for election as a Special Inductee. Special Inductees may include coaches and athletic staff members, distinguished alumni, friends of UNC Pembroke Athletics, and other individuals who are not necessarily eligible as a Student-Athlete Inductee. Eligibility as a Student-Athlete Inductee shall not disqualify an individual for consideration as a Special Inductee. A maximum of one (1) nominee from this category may be elected in any year, and any Special Inductee(s) will not be applied to or affect the maximum number of inductees in a respective class.. There is no expectation to choose a Special Inductee every year.
SELECTION PROCESS
A minimum of two (2) and up to six (6) individuals will be elected from the list of finalists by a consensus vote. In an extreme case of a special circumstance in which the selection committee feels an additional candidate should be elected to the Hall of Fame, the Director of Athletics will review such a case and make that final decision.
INDUCTION EVENT
Inductees shall be invited to the annual UNC Pembroke Athletics Hall of Fame Induction event the night prior to the Homecoming football game each fall. Attendance is not required for induction.
INDUCTEE RECOGNITION
Each inductee shall receive the following upon, or shortly after, their induction: a commemorative plaque, on-field recognition at the Homecoming football game, and permanent recognition in the Athletics Hall of Fame digital display at UNC Pembroke.
COMMITTEE REGULATIONS
The Athletics Hall of Fame Committee shall consist of the current UNCP Director of Athletics (non-voting) and a five (5) member committee (voting). The Athletics Hall of Fame Committee will be appointed each year by the Chancellor with committee members being listed on the official athletics website on the Hall of Fame webpage.
 
  1. The committee (voting) will be formed no later than May 1 of each year and must include:
    • One (1) Male UNCP Athletics Hall of Fame Member – 3-year Term
    • One (1) Female UNCP Athletics Hall of Fame Member – 3-year Term
    • One (1) Male Braves Club Member – 2-year Term
    • One (1) Female Braves Club Member – 2-year Term
    • One (1) UNCP Staff or Faculty Member – 1-year Term
  2. The nomination acceptance period will span the entire calendar year, but April 30 is the cutoff date for candidates to be considered for the next induction class.
  3. The current year’s inductees will be recommended to the Chancellor no later than September 15 of each year.
  4. Each committee member is limited to serving two terms before sitting out at least one full term.
Committee Member Restrictions
  1. No currently active UNC Pembroke coach is permitted to serve on the committee.
  2. No current committee member may be an inductee in the same year.
  3. A committee member who is a close relative of a nominee will not participate in the discussion regarding such nominee.
Number inductees per year will be determined as follows:
  1. In nomination years with 10 or more complete nomination packets for eligible nominees, six (6) inductees can be selected through the ballot process.
  2. In nomination years with less than 10 complete nomination packets for eligible nominees, a minimum of two (2) inductees can be selected through the ballot process.
The committee will meet as necessary to review the nomination packets, policies and the current inductee recommendations will be communicated only to the Chancellor.

Prior to a formal press release from the UNCP Athletic Communications Office, the names of the current inductees will remain in the confidence of the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee and the Chancellor. 

Committee has full autonomy to appoint ad hoc subcommittees with at-large membership for specific research or projects.
