Extra Benefits

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution's athletics interests (booster) to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., foreign students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.

Student-athletes of UNCP may receive complimentary admissions under the following conditions:
  • Student athletes are allowed a maximum of four complimentary admissions to both home and away contests in their sport.
  • The complimentary admissions are provided through a pass list.
  • A student-athlete may not receive payment from any source for their complimentary admissions.
  • The complimentary admissions may only be for regular season home games.

Student-athletes may also receive an occasional meal from an athletics booster under the following conditions:
  • The meal must be provided in an individual's home (as opposed to a restaurant) and may be catered,
  • Meals must be restricted to infrequent and special occasions; and
  • Institutional staff members may provide transportation to student-athletes to attend such meals. A representative of the institution's athletics interests may only provide transportation to student-athletes to attend the meal function if the meal furnished is at the home of the representative.

Student-athletes may not receive other "extra benefits," as defined above, which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Special discounts or payment arrangement on a purchase (e.g. airline tickets, clothing)
  • Special service arrangements or payments (e.g. laundry, dry cleaning)
  • A loan of money
  • A car or use of a car
  • Transportation
  • Signing or cosigning a loan
