Wrestling's Blaze Shade was named the male student-athlete of the year, while softball's Jamie Johnson took home female student-athlete of the year recognition, to highlight the 3rd Annual Golden Braves Awards on April 25 inside the University Center Annex.

Johnson started all 54 games for UNCP, compiling a team-high .420 on-base percentage and 46 runs scored. A Kenly, N.C. native, Johnson hit .363 this season with 15 doubles, three triples and five home runs, driving in 30 runs and stealing 26 bases. The Braves' third baseman ranked in the top 10 of eight league categories, including the third-most hits and fourth-most total bases. Johnson reached base in a team-high 24-consecutive games at one point last season and compiled a 14-game hitting streak.

Shade, an Erial, N.J., product, rattled off a 42-5 (.894) record, including a perfect 6-0 mark in the inaugural season of ECAC competition. His 42 victories – the fourth-most in school history – included 24 bonus-point wins (11 pins, four technical falls, nine major decisions), as well as a 22-1 mark in dual meets.
