Shatonya Hardy 2021 Headshot

Shatonya Reid

A regular in the starting lineup for the Black & Gold from 2013-15, Shatonya (Hardy) Reid begins her third season as an assistant coach with the Braves in 2023-24.

Heavily involved in campus life during her time as a student in Pembroke, Reid secured a position as a technical operations assistant with CNN in Atlanta just two months following commencement. After just 10 months with the organization, she was promoted to master control operator – a position she served in for nearly four years before transitioning to a career as a middle and high school English teacher in the Harnett County (N.C.) School System.

A philanthropist as well, Reid has involved herself in a number of volunteer roles, including a position as an assistant with Jujack Entertainment. She also founded EyeVae Sunglasses in 2019 whose proceeds are donated to establish scholarship funds.

Reid played and started in 53 games for Queens from 2011-13 before transferring to UNC Pembroke in time for the 2013-14 campaign. She saw time in 52 games (47 starts) with the Braves, and finished her career in the Black & Gold with averages of 5.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in just more than 28 minutes per game on the hardwood. She earned team defensive most valuable player accolades as both a sophomore at Queens and as a senior at UNCP.

Reid earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communications from UNC Pembroke in 2015. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in communication at Liberty.

The daughter of former Pembroke State two-sport standout and current E.E. Smith girls basketball head coach Latonya Dee Major Hardy, Shatonya and her husband, Carl, are the proud parents of a daughter, Zhuri.

Avae’s sister, Alecia, played in 53 games for the Braves from 2017-19 after transferring from Charleston Southern.
