Having already attained a plethora of experience while working with both the football and wrestling programs at Iowa, Lauren Werner joined the UNC Pembroke athletics department in August 2019 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer. Werner has been charged with the day-to-day athletic training responsibilities for both the wrestling team and the spirit squad.

Prior to trekking to southeastern North Carolina, Werner dove head first into clinical experiences at her alma mater while completing her undergraduate studies. She gained a wealth of experience working with six teams at Iowa, including a stint with the football squad during its 2018 spring season. She underwent a pair of clinical experiences with the nationally-ranked wrestling team, including a full-season stint with the Hawkeyes grapplers in 2018-19.

In addition to her clinical work, Werner has also logged a wealth of volunteer experiences as well, including one at the 2016 NCAA Men’s & Women’s Cross Country region meet and the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. She also served as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Cadet Nationals a month prior to beginning her work in Pembroke.

The 2018 recipient of Iowa’s Kevin Nels Negaard Award which is presented annually to a second-year athletic training student who shows the greatest promise in the profession, Werner also picked up the John J. Strief Award in 2017 for significant and consistent contributions to clinical services, as well as the Member Services Attendant of the Year laurel in 2018. She earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Iowa in 2018, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in sports administration at UNCP.
