CHARLOTTE – After being down by 13 points at the 12:13 mark in the first half, the UNCP women's basketball team attempted a comeback, but ended up one point short of overtime play as Queens claimed the 56-55 victory over the Lady Braves on Saturday afternoon in the Oven Athletic Complex.

Leading the Lady Braves (1-1) with a career high 20 points was senior Domonique Washington, while junior Anya Knower tied her career best with 10 points. Not only did Washington lead on the offensive side of the ball, but she led the defense by grabbing seven rebounds and four steals. Senior DeDe Cotten dished out nine assists and had two steals in her 39 minutes on the floor.

Knower was 100 percent from the free throw line as she brought UNCP to within one point on a layup at the 00:41 mark and again on two made free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game.

The Royals (1-2) took the quick lead with a 9-0 run in the first half and controlled the pace of the game. Queens grabbed 46 rebounds to outrebound UNCP by 16 despite tallying 19 turnovers. UNCP finished shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Queens saw three athletes registered double-digit scoring as Shonice Pettaway posted 18 points to lead the team, while Sarah Myatt registered a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Queens was 21-of-53 from the field and 12-of-20 from the free throw line.

"We had another slow start and dug ourselves into a hole," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "Our biggest difference in the second half was our second-chance shots because we were more aggressive on the offensive boards."

The loss allowed Queens to snap UNCP's seven-game winning streak in the series between the two schools.

UNCP will now make the trek to face region rival Wingate (1-0) on Tuesday in the Cannon Complex in Wingate. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
