Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – Newcomer Sam Miles garnered Freshman of the Year accolades and joined two of his teammates on the all-conference squads as the Peach Belt Conference unveiled its 2011 Men's Soccer All-Conference team on Thursday evening.
Miles graced the first team as one of four forwards, while grabbing the PBC's "Golden Ball" award for having a stellar season especially with this being his first season of collegiate competition. He leads the PBC with 12 goals, 29 points and 64 shots, and is tied for fourth in the league with five assists. The New Zealand native has played and started all 17 games for the Black and Gold to collect more than 1,260 minutes on the field. He has registered two game-winning goals for the Braves including the victory over Brevard and Barton.
The forward was especially effective over a four-game stretch in September as he scored seven goals in four games with three multi-goal efforts. He is the third Brave to be named the Freshman of the Year along with Stephen Ademolu in 2001 and Christian Staackmann in 2005. Miles was awarded Offensive Player of the Week during October for his effort in leading UNCP to victories over Barton and Clayton State.
Senior Michael Davis garnered a spot on the all-conference second-team as one of four defenders for his effort in the back field. Davis has played and started every game since joining the squad his freshman year, which set a new school record for most games started. The Charlotte native has scored four goals including two game-winning goals against Young Harris and Clayton State.
As a three-year captain for the Black and Gold, he has led the UNCP defense that has captured a conference-best 12 goals allowed. He was named Defensive Player of the Week in October for being effective on offense and defense in the 1-1 tie with Montevallo.
Sophomore Ryan Hanson joined Davis on the all-conference second-team as one of two goalkeepers for his more than 1,200 minutes between the posts. Hanson has posted a 7-4-2 record along with grabbing 49 saves in 158 shots faced while only allowing opponents to score a conference-best 12 goals.
The Cary native was named Goalkeeper of the Week in October as he faced 17-shots during the week grabbed four saves along with allowing only one goal. He has an 0.85 goals against average and .803 saves percentage which are third in the conference.
The Braves head to Evans, Ga., to finish out the PBC Tournament as they face Montevallo in the semifinals on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The winners of both Friday contests will meet in Sunday's championship game at 3:30 p.m.
