No. 7 Winston-Salem State Too Much For Braves

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Seventh-ranked Winston-Salem State accumulated more than 42 minutes of possession time and negated a first quarter lead by UNCP with 34 points of their own en route to a 34-7 win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

Senior Travis Daniels carried the ball 20 times for 130 yards to provide most of the offensive highlights on the day for the Braves (7-3), who had their four-game winning streak snapped with the setback. Quarterback Luke Charles threw for 140 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-27 passing, while senior Joe Burnett paced the receiving corps with three catches for 49 yards. Jamelle Banks hauled in his only catch of the game on a 5-yard scoring strike in the opening period.

Junior linebacker Fred Williams posted a team-best 12 stops to climb over the 100-tackle plateau, while DeVante Bush turned in a pair of sacks.

Winston-Salem State (10-0) got 146 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries from Nicholas Cooper, with Lumberton native Maurice Lewis adding 90 yards on the ground (17 carries), as well as second quarter score. Quarterback Kameron Smith threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-27 passing, with 12 different receivers registering at least one reception in the contest.

"I thought that we were ready to play but, by the way we played, we obviously weren't," said UNCP head coach Pete Shinnick. "We just didn't play well enough and it seemed like everything went well for Winston-Salem State. That 18-play drive in the first half took the wind out of us a little bit. We did a poor job of executing our game plan. We just had zero momentum offensively."

Winston-Salem State saw just the second deficit of the season in the first quarter when Charles capped off a 12-play, 91-yard scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Banks, but the Rams answered back on the next possession, driving 47 yards in eight plays before Lewis scored the game-tying touchdown on an 11-yard scamper.

The Rams took the game's final lead on their next possession, driving 72 yards in 18 plays and draining nearly eight minutes off the clock. The drive was capped on a 3-yard touchdown run by Cooper. After forcing UNCP on a 3-and-out on the ensuing possession, the Rams would need just 86 seconds to scratch the scoreboard again, this time capping a 9-play, 52-yard drive on a 10-yard pass from Smith to Tehvyn Brantley with 11 seconds left before the intermission.

The Rams would score twice more in the third quarter, first on a 13-yard pass from Smith to Jerry Chandler with 3:33 left in the period, and then three minutes later on a 9-yard pass from Smith to Brandon Akinbiyi. Four of five second half drives for the hosts lasted five plays or less.

UNCP will close out the 2011 regular season on Saturday when the Braves suit up to host West Liberty (1-9) in a 1 p.m. contest at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
