Box Score PEMBROKE – Senior Domonique Washington registered her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the UNCP women's basketball team fell short due to more than 25 turnovers as Chowan captured the 54-49 victory over the Lady Braves Wednesday evening in the English E. Jones Center.
Washington not only led the Lady Braves (3-4) in rebounding, but in assists with five. Junior Courtney Bolton drained 15 points, and was a force on defense with eight rebounds. Bolton was 4-of-9 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
Neither team led by more than six points as the score was tied six times, and the lead changed on eight different occasions. The second half was a contest that swayed back-and-forth by three points after the Lady Braves held the five-point lead at the 15:27 mark on a jumper by Taylor Gallentine.
The game was tied at 47-47 with 1:37 lasting on the clock, however Talaya Lynch put Chowan (4-5) ahead by two. The Lady Hawks controlled the final minute, and sealed the win on Washington's turnover with less than 10 seconds left.
The Lady Hawks were first on the scoreboard with two points, but were quickly answered by Bolton's three-point play. As the half progressed, the score remained 16-15 in favor of Chowan, but the Lady Braves used five free throws and a fast break layup by Washington with less than a minute left in the half to take the lead, 22-16. The Black and Gold entered halftime with a mere three point lead after T'Arra Cutting made a 3-pointer with 00:37 remaining.
Freshman Jazmine Kemp finished with seven points, six rebounds and shared a game-high two blocks. Senior DeDe Cotten dished out four assists, and led the team in steal with five. The Lady Braves totaled 41 rebounds, and shot 68.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Chowan had three players that tallied double-digit scoring as Lynch had 16, Ransheda Jennings added 15 and Janelle Murphy totaled 11. Lynch led the defense with eight rebounds, while Jennings pulled down eight and led the team in steals with six. The Lady Hawks grabbed 43 rebounds and suffered 18 turnovers.
"This was a disappointing loss," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "We handled the ball terrible with 16 turnovers in the first half, and we made some poor decisions with the basketball. The other difference was that we shot the ball poorly."
The Lady Braves will hit the road to battle Peach Belt Conference opponents Flagler(1-7, 0-3 PBC) on Saturday in Flagler Gymnasium at 1:30 p.m. and Armstrong Atlantic (6-2, 1-1) on Monday in Alumni Arena at 5:30 p.m. Both games are doubleheaders with the men's games following the conclusion of the women's games.
