Lady Braves Late Comeback Falls Short To Saints, 62-61

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Coming off a 10 day holiday break from action, the UNCP women's basketball team attempted a comeback after using a 17-1 run in the final 10 minutes of action, but fell in the final seconds to Limestone, 62-61, despite outrebounding the Saints on Friday evening on the first day of the Stair South Classic hosted by Georgia College in the Centennial Center.

The Lady Braves (4-6) tallied 45 rebounds compared to Limestone's (6-4) 28 rebounds, but suffered in three-point shooting as the Black and Gold connected 4-of-12 while the Saints were 11-of-22. A trio of Lady Braves totaled double-digit scoring with junior Courtney Bolton leading the way with 16 points, while Domonique Washington and Jazmine Kemp added 15 and 10, respectively.

Leading the defense with eight rebounds was senior DeDe Cotten, while Kemp grabbed seven. UNCP shot 40.0 percent from the field and 68.4 percent from the free throw line, while the Saints shot 38.5 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from the charity stripe.

UNCP took the first lead with four points until Limestone started on a roll and led by 12 points at the 8:45 mark in the first half and by 10 points at halftime. The Lady Braves were down 30-20 going into the half as the team allowed the Saint 10 second chance points. 

The greatest lead of the game for Limestone came in the second half at the 11:46 mark with 14 points, but UNCP sparked its run to take the lead with 8:24 remaining in the game. Bolton's three-pointer gave UNCP the 47-45 lead and continued its run to allow the Black and Gold to hold an eight point lead with less than seven minutes remaining to play.

The game was tied for the first time at the 2:19 mark at 59-59 and was won in the final five seconds on a free throw by Limestone's Tia Williams. UNCP totaled 20 points in the paint in the second half and nine points off turnovers.

Williams led the way on offense for the Saints with 24 points, while Maria Young tallied 19. Kaileigh West led the team in rebounding with seven, while Lauren Pace dished out seven assists.

The Lady Braves will matchup against Tusculum (5-4) on Saturday afternoon for the final game of the Stair South Classic Tournament. Tip off is slated for 1 p.m.
