Gilley's 11 K's Lead UNCP Past #11 Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE – Despite just three hits on offense and committing three errors on defense, the UNCP softball team followed the lead of sophomore Starr Gilley and held off 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne for a 1-0 nonconference victory in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.

The Lady Braves (5-3, 0-0 PBC) were out-hit by an 8-3 margin, but Gilley was tough all day in finishing with 11 strikeouts and stranding 12 Lenoir-Rhyne baserunners on the afternoon.

UNCP got the first and only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI-double by senior Morgan Patrick that scored Kellie Van Dyke from second base.

Gilley went the distance to improve her record to 3-1 on the season and stranded one baserunner or more in every inning except the seventh when she retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the last two at-bats.

Morgan Patrick led the squad with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish, including her RBI-double in the third inning.

Holly Berry went 1-for-1 with two walks to account for the other UNCP hit.

The Lady Braves will be back tomorrow when they take on the Catawba Indians in a nonconference doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke with the first game scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
