Box Score 2 PEMBROKE – Visiting Catawba College used a first-inning grand slam to set the groundwork for what would be a 6-3 victory over UNCP in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.
The Lady Braves (5-4, 0-0 PBC) fell behind 4-0 following Khourtni Hester's blast to center, but would rebound in the bottom of the inning behind a double by senior Morgan Patrick and an RBI-double by senior Loren Bartz that scored Patrick from second. Sophomore Holly Berry then singled to left center to score Bartz from second and cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Indians (3-0, 0-0 SAC) would add another run in the top of the second inning to increase their lead to 5-2, but the Lady Braves would get one back in the bottom of the third inning on a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Ashley Harrell that scored senior Courtney Hill.
Catawba then added another run in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 6-3 and UNCP would not be able to get another run across the board in suffering their fourth loss of the season.
The Lady Braves were led by Berry's 3-for-3 effort that included an RBI-single in the bottom of the first inning. Patrick finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and freshman Schanique Barrett finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Freshman Natalie Klemann took the loss after giving up four earned runs in one inning of work.
