Box Score 2 AMERICUS, Ga. – The Lady Braves were able to score three runs in the first inning, but they would not be able to record a hit the rest of the way in falling to the host Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes by a 4-3 final in game two of Sunday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
The Lady Braves (7-7, 0-2 PBC) were limited to just two hits during the game, with both coming in the first inning.
UNCP got the offense going quickly when freshman Schanique Barrett singled to shortstop, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Morgan Patrick, and then moved to third on a passed ball. She came in to score on a fielder's choice by senior Courtney Hill. Hill advanced to second on a throwing error during the play and following a walk by sophomore Holly Berry, senior Loren Bartz singled down the right field line to score Hill from second. During Bartz' single, Berry advanced to third and came home during Jamie Burwell's at-bat to score the last run of the inning for the Lady Braves.
The score would remain 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lady Hurricanes put two runners across the plate to trim the lead to 3-2, and another score in the bottom of the fifth would tie up the ballgame.
An RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth inning by Katie Wooten put the hosts out front with a 4-3 lead, and the Lady Braves would not be able to get any more runs across the board in falling to the hosts by a 4-3 final.
Barrett led the squad with a 1-for-4 effort at the plate with a run scored while Bartz was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Jamie Burwell took the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) in 2-2/3 innings pitched with four strikeouts.
The Lady Braves will be back at it on Tuesday when they host Pfeiffer in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at LRA Field in Pembroke.
