No. 18 UNCP Completes Sweep Of Deacons With Rout In Finale

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Home-standing UNCP pounded out a series-best 14 hits and scored three or more runs in four different frames to complete a weekend sweep of visiting Bloomfield with a 17-5 rout of the Deacons in Sunday's series finale at Sammy Cox Field.

Nine different players recorded base hits for the Braves (11-0) who extended its season-opening and school record win streak out to 11 with the triumph. Newcomer Eitan Maoz closed out an outstanding weekend by singling twice and tripling once to highlight a 3-for-3 day at the plate that also included a trio of RBI. Two other players recorded multi-hit games for the hosts with J.J. Williams doubling en route to a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI, while senior Keith Whitman drove in a run on a 2-for-4 hitting line.

Josh Haley (1-for-3) tagged his third home run of the season in the midst of a three-run fourth inning, while Joe Mangum (1-for-3) hit his second four-bagger of the season to provide both runs in the sixth.  Stephen McKinney scored four times on a 1-for-4 plate performance.

Edgardo Fernandez drove in a run and scored twice on a 2-for-3 day at the plate for Bloomfield (0-3), with Christian Rosa scoring once on a 2-for-3 outing as well.

Making his second start in four days, senior Josh Bagley (2-0) picked up the win for the Braves, offsetting eight hits and five earned runs with six strikeouts in the outing. Luis Mendoza (0-1) took the loss for the Deacons after yielding six hits, three walks and eight runs (four earned) in 2-2/3 innings from the hill. Mendoza allowed four runs on three hits and as many walks in the midst of a 55-pitch first inning for the Dominican Republic native.

UNCP carried a 4-0 lead into the second inning, but had extended the advantage out to 12-5 by the end of the fourth inning. The Black and Gold would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on Mangum's one-out home run, and completed the scoring barrage with three more runs in the seventh.

The Braves will be back in action again on Wednesday when they make the short trip to Laurinburg to battle region rival St. Andrews (2-4) in a 2 p.m. first pitch at Clark Field. UNCP will open Peach Belt Conference play this weekend at home when it suits up to lock horns with No. 8 North Georgia (8-1, 0-0 PBC) in a three-game series at Sammy Cox Field.
