Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, NORTH CAROLINA – The two teams combined for just nine hits, but runs in the home half of the fifth and sixth innings allowed UNCP to capture a 2-0 victory over visiting Pfeiffer in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.
The Lady Braves (9-7, 0-2 PBC) were led by a combined six innings of scoreless pitching from starter Starr Gilley and Caroline Newman, while junior Jamie Burwell came in for a scoreless seventh inning to earn her second save of the season.
The scoreless game was broken up in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior Morgan Patrick doubled to left center and was brought around to score on a triple by senior Courtney Hill.
The second run came from sophomore Hillary Jones, who ripped a single off the glove of the Falcons' third baseman and an errant throw from the hot corner allowed junior Ashley Harrell to score from second.
Newman earned the win after throwing 3-2/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with one strikeout.
Jones led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI while Hill was 1-for-1 with an RBI-triple. Patrick and Loren Bartz each recorded one hit to account for all five of the Lady Braves' hits.
The squad will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Wingate for a nonconference doubleheader with the Wingate Bulldogs.
