Grantham, Lady Braves Slam Hawks For Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MURFREESBORO – A first-inning grand slam by senior Lynn Grantham during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader set the tone for a UNCP sweep over the host Chowan Hawks by scores of 8-7 and 12-3 at Hawks Field in Murfreesboro.

The Lady Braves (3-1, 0-0 PBC) pounded out 24 hits in the two games and got off to an early 4-0 start in the first game behind Grantham's slam to left field, giving UNCP starter Starr Gilley plenty of breathing room for her to work with.

UNCP would be kept scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Taylor Cloninger would leg out an infield single to the second baseman, and promptly steal second base and advance to third on a passed ball. Jamie Burwell then ripped a single to left field to score Cloninger, and a single by senior Courtney Hill would move Burwell to second in the next at-bat. Loren Bartz then singled to load up the bases for Holly Berry, who continued her torrid hitting with a single to right that scored Burwell from third.

Grantham then did some more damage with an RBI-double down the left field line that scored Cloninger and Bartz, putting UNCP up 8-1.

Things got a little shaky for UNCP in the ninth as the Hawks (0-6) would put up six runs in the inning, but Jamie Burwell would step in and get the final two outs, giving the Lady Braves an 8-7 victory.

Gilley took the win for UNCP after going five innings in the circle. She allowed just one earned run and dished out five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Grantham led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort with six RBI and a run scored. Berry finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Burwell went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

In game two the Lady Braves kept their hot bats going from the seventh inning of game one with a six-run top of the first, giving UNCP a healthy 6-0 lead. They would add two runs in the second and four in the third inning to stake out a 12-0 lead. Chowan got two runners across in the fourth and one in the fifth, but UNCP had secured a 12-3 five-inning victory due to the NCAA run-ahead rule.

Sophomore Kellie Van Dyke led the team with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate and matched Grantham's effort in game one with six RBI of her own. Hill finished with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a run scored and freshman Schanique Barrett went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases from the leadoff spot. Senior Morgan Patrick went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI-single in the third inning.

Berry went hitless for the first time this season, but still wound up with three RBI and three runs scored during the game.

Burwell took the win after going throwing three innings of scoreless ball.

The Lady Braves will be back in Pembroke on Wednesday as they host Mount Olive in a nonconference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
