No. 9 Braves Rally To Complete Sweep Of Flagler

Box Score

PEMBROKE – Flagler scored four runs with the first four at-bats of the game, but home-standing and ninth-ranked UNCP answered with eight unanswered runs of its own to finish off a weekend sweep of the Saints with an 8-4 win in Sunday's series finale at Sammy Cox Field.

The triumph handed UNCP (20-3, 5-3 PBC) its first league series sweep of the season and its first since taking all three games from visiting Armstrong Atlantic in early April of last season. Flagler (11-11, 2-4), who toted a four-game win streak into its weekend matchup with the Braves, has now lost three consecutive games for the first time all season.

Three different players recorded two hits apiece for UNCP, including newcomer J.J. Williams who drove in a run and singled twice on a 2-for-4 hitting line. Josh Haley drove in a run and scored twice on a 2-for-4 day at the plate, with Keith Whitman registering a 2-for-4 plate performance as well. Newcomers Brad Bridgeman and Brandon Huffman each hit home runs for UNCP to key the comeback as well.

Kyle Foti booked a team-best 3-for-4 outing for the Saints, who also got a 2-for-4 day at the plate from Jose Rohena. John Sgromolo homered for the second time this season to provide a bulk of the visitors' damage.

Brad Isom (5-0) shook off a rough start to his sixth appearance of the campaign to record a career-best 10 strikeouts and grabbed the win despite exiting the first inning with a 4-0 deficit. Micah Kellogg (0-1) snared his first loss of the season after yielding five earned runs on five hits and a trio of walks in four innings from the hill. He also struck out one.

Two singles, a double and a three-run home run by Sgromolo highlighted Flagler's first four at-bats of the game and allowed the Saints to grab a quick 4-0 lead, but the Braves answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to take most of the shock out of the crowd in attendance. Huffman's leadoff homer in the second brought the hosts to within a run, while Haley's sacrifice fly in the fourth knotting the score back up.

A costly balk by Kellogg with runners on the corners a short time later would give UNCP a lead it would not relinquish. Bridgeman's two-run blast, coupled with a RBI single by Williams, in the eighth would give the Braves a trio of insurance runs.

After a nightmarish four-batter stretch to start the game, Isom retired 21 of the next 24 batters he faced and held back a rally attempt by Flagler in the eighth by getting Evan Grandizio to hit into a key double play.

UNCP will be back in action again on Wednesday when the Braves continue a nine-game home stand by welcoming Mars Hill (10-12) to Sammy Cox Field for a 2 p.m. contest.
