Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – Host and 22nd-ranked Columbus State offset an early 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to post a series-clinching 4-2 win over No. 7 UNCP in game two of a weekend series at Ragsdale Field on Sunday morning.
The loss dropped UNCP (24-6, 7-6 PBC) to 0-4 in Peach Belt Conference road games this season, while also marking the second PBC road series loss for the Braves as well. Columbus State (20-11, 6-5) won for just the second time in its last six outings, but improved to 4-1 at home in league play this season.
The game was resumed after being suspended in the seventh inning on Saturday evening due to lightning. Officially, the delay in action lasted nearly 19 hours (18 hours, 41 minutes).
Keith Whitman booked his fourth home run of the season, and his third in the last three games, to bookmark a 1-for-4 outing that paved the way for the Braves, who also got two hits apiece from Brad Bridgeman (2-for-3) and Jason Coker (2-for-4). Ryan Lewis drove in three runs on a 3-for-4 outing to pace the Cougars who also got 2-for-4 hitting lines from Bruce Alter, Eric Skinner and Aaron Jividen. Alter's outing was highlighted by his sixth home run of the season.
Brad Isom (5-2) picked up the loss for UNCP after yielding four earned runs on nine hits and a walk, while also striking out four batters. Tyler Carpenter (4-2) grabbed the win for the hosts, striking out four and surrendering just two earned runs across seven innings of work. Brian Satterfield booked his second save of the campaign after allowing just one hit and striking out a pair of Braves in the eighth and ninth innings.
After two scoreless innings, UNCP got something going in the third by putting runners at the corners with just one out on the board, but catcher Noah Watkins rifled out J.J. Williams attempting to steal second and Carpenter induced Josh Haley to hit into an inning-ending grounder to shortstop. The visitors would take the momentum into the top of the fourth frame, however, putting together a two-out rally that was highlighted by a bunt single from Eitan Maoz and an ensuing home run from Whitman.
Columbus State would rally to take the lead over its next two frames, however, using a two-run single by Lewis with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, and then pushing ahead, 3-2, on a one-out homer from Alter in the fifth. Lewis's RBI single with one out in the sixth would stretch the lead out to a pair of runs.
