Box Score 2 Greenwood, S.C. – After closing out the first UNCP victory with four strikeouts over the final two innings, junior Jamie Burwell added 13 more in the encore in leading UNCP to a 4-0 victory and a doubleheader sweep in the second game of Monday's doubleheader at Doug Spears Field in Greenwood, S.C.
Burwell limited the Bearcats' (19-14, 4-6 PBC) to just two hits over seven innings to improve to 6-5 overall on the season. Her 13 strikeouts set a new season high for the Lady Braves' (17-15, 5-5 PBC) pitching staff and the total breaks her previous career high of 10 strikeouts she posted in the Lady Braves' 5-3 win over Catawba on February 13. Burwell's career-high also stands as the most by any UNCP hurler since April 12, 2005 when Nicole McCorkle struck out 15 against Armstrong Atlantic.
The UNCP offense was held hitless until the top of the third inning when sophomore Kellie Van Dyke singled to centerfield and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Burwell. A groundout by freshman Schanique Barrett moved Van Dyke over to third, and she came around to score on an RBI-single to centerfield by freshman Taylor Cloninger.
The Lady Braves would wait until the top of the sixth inning before pushing two more runs across. Senior Lynn Grantham laid down a squeeze bunt with the bases loaded that scored sophomore Holly Berry from third, and an errant throw by the Bearcats' pitcher to home allowed senior Morgan Patrick to score after Berry, giving UNCP a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Braves would add one more insurance run in the top of the seventh when Burwell came home to score on a passed ball.
Cloninger led the offense with a 1-for-3 effort with an RBI and Berry added a 1-for-4 line with a run scored.
The Lady Braves will be back at on Tuesday afternoon when they take on No. 5 North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga.
