Box Score PEMBROKE – Home-standing and 15th-ranked UNCP homered four times, including Keith Whitman's record-breaking long ball, in a six-run fourth inning to help the Braves complete a season sweep of region rival St. Andrews with a 20-5 victory over the Knights on Monday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
The victory helped UNCP (34-10) snap a three-game slide, while also giving the hosts their ninth-straight victory in the series. The setback completed a winless April for St. Andrews (8-36) who will carry a 15-game losing skid into next season.
The Braves got multi-hit outings from six players on the night to fuel a 19-hit attack. Newcomer J.J. Williams walked, drove in a run and scored once on a perfect 3-for-3 night at the plate, with Josh Haley, Jason Coker, Eitan Maoz and Brad Bridgeman all providing a pair of hits. Maoz, who turned in a 2-for-2 plate performance, homered for the first time this season, with Bridgeman and senior Joe Mangum homering as well.
Whitman used his only hit of the night to shatter UNCP's all-time mark for home runs, blasting his 41st career homer well over the centerfield wall in the big fourth inning to highlight a 1-for-2 night at the plate that also included a hit by pitch that made a direct hit to the Elkin native's nose in the third.
St. Andrews got eight of its 10 hits on the night from the first three batters in its order, including a 4-for-4 hitting line from T.J. Werner. Michael Cantwell and R.J. Blasi each registered a pair of safeties in the outing as well.
Brad Isom (8-3) struck out seven and allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits over six innings of work to grab the win for the Black and Gold, with freshman Aubrey Meadows scattering three hits and striking out seven to pick up the save with three effective innings of relief. Ryan Pierce (3-8) saddled the loss for the Knights after surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks in 3-1/3 innings of work. He also struck out two.
UNCP used a leadoff triple from Haley, as well as an ensuing sacrifice fly from Coker, to take a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but St. Andrews rallied to tie the score on a two-out single by Blasi in the third. However, UNCP would quickly put the game away, adding three runs in the bottom of the frame before blowing the night wide open with the huge fourth inning. The frame would be highlighted by back-to-back homers from Whitman and Maoz, as well as back-to-back jacks from Mangum and Bridgeman a short time later.
The Braves will close out their 2011 home schedule on Tuesday when they suit up to welcome Chowan (30-16) for a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field. Admission prices are $5 for adults and $2 for children 18 years of age and younger. UNCP students are admitted free with a valid Braves Card.
