PEMBROKE – UNCP got consecutive one-out RBI singles in the third inning and used a solid start from right-hander Josh Bagley to slip by Chowan, 2-1, in the front half of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

The triumph marked the ninth consecutive home victory for UNCP (35-10) who improved to 10-3 all-time in its series with Chowan (30-17). The Hawks dropped just their second road game of the season and their first since dropping a 9-5 decision at St. Andrews in mid-February.

Josh Haley singled three times in as many trips to the plate to finish off a perfect 3-for-3 plate performance, with newcomer Brad Bridgeman singling twice and providing a sacrifice hit on a flawless 2-for-2 hitting line. Senior Kenny Mickens singled and doubled on three trips to the plate for the Braves as well.

Colby Wiggins tacked up a pair of singles to highlight a 2-for-3 day for Chowan who also got singles from three other players as well.

Bagley (5-3) struck out three and scattered five hits and a lone earned run over five innings from the hill to pick up the second win in his last three appearances, while Braxton Lewis struck out four in hitless sixth and seventh frames to register his seventh save of the campaign. Josh DesChamps (5-5) allowed a pair of earned runs on eight hits and two walks over his seventh complete game of the season en route to saddling the loss for the visitors.

Keith Whitman drew a free pass to lead off the third, stole second and later scored on a one-out single from Mickens, who would cross the plate himself a short time later on Bridgeman's RBI single to left field. Chowan did its only damage of the game in the following frame when pinch runner Jordan Williams scored on a costly wild pitch by Bagley.
