Box Score LAURINBURG – The UNCP softball squad used 16 walks and seven errors by the St. Andrews defense to capture a 15-8 nonconference victory over the Lady Knights Friday afternoon in Laurinburg.
The Lady Braves' (20-21, 7-11 PBC) 16 walks are the most by a PBC team since USC Aiken recorded 17 walks in an 11-2 win at South Carolina State on Feb. 3, 2007. The offense was helped by seven errors by the Lady Knights (4-29), with both offenses pounding out 10 hits on the afternoon.
UNCP senior Caroline Newman was credited with the complete-game victory after allowing eight runs (three earned) over seven innings with six strikeouts.
Freshman Schanique Barrett led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort with two RBI, including an RBI-double in the top of the second inning.
Sophomore Holly Berry finished with an 0-for-2 line at the plate, but recorded three walks and stole four bases, which finished one shy of tying the PBC mark for the category. She also scored three runs which tied for the team lead with senior Lynn Grantham (1-for-3, RBI).
Junior Jamie Burwell recorded two hits (2-for-3) with a walk and an RBI and a run scored for the Lady Braves.
The Lady Braves will return home for a PBC doubleheader on Sunday when they host the Flagler Saints on Senior Day in their regular-season finale.
