UNCP Rides High With 54-50 Victory Over Georgia College

Box Score

PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's basketball team used composed offensive play as a contributing factor to the 54-50 home victory over Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia College on Sunday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.

The victory marked the fourth-consecutive win this season, and snapped the two-game losing streak in the series between the two schools. The Lady Braves (8-8, 5-3 PBC) grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and 24 defensive rebounds to total 37 rebounds. UNCP also committed four fewer turnovers than Georgia College (4-13, 2-6) who totaled 35 rebounds. The Black and Gold scored 21 points off the 14 Georgia College turnovers.

Senior Domonique Washington and junior Courtney Bolton each drained 10 points, while freshman Jazmine Kemp led the team with eight rebounds. Washington dished out four assists, grabbed a trio of steals and posted her career best two blocks. The Lady Braves also shot 33.3 percent from the field, 25.9 percent from the 3-point line and knocked down 11-of-17 foul shots.

Georgia College controlled the lead for more than the first seven minutes of the game until newcomer Haley Magee gave the Lady Braves the lead on the three point play. UNCP denied Georgia College the opportunity to take the lead as there was only one lead change and one tied score during the entire game. The Lady Braves led by five points at the half and by a game-high 12 points at the 16:48 mark in the second half on a layup by senior DeDe Cotten.

"Well first of all I knew it was going to be a battle coming it," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "They are hard to score against, they are good defensively and they did a good job defending us. I though everyone did some little things. Courtney did some little things when she needed to, Kemp got some hustle plays and got some rebounds. Domonique got a couple big plays including off a steal and for the layup."

Shanteona Keys posted a game-high 17 points and six assists, while Enisha Donley scored 12 points and led the team with seven rebounds. The Lady Bobcats were 39.6 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the charity stripe.

On Wednesday, the Lady Braves begin the first of four-consecutive games on the road as the squad travels to Augusta State (8-9, 3-6) for a 5:30 p.m. contest in the Christenberry Fieldhouse.
