Box Score PEMBROKE – Jordan Roberts racked up 327 all-purpose yards, including a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter, to spark visiting Charleston to a 42-30 upset victory over 24th-ranked UNCP on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.
The setback snapped a five-game winning streak for UNCP (5-2) who last tasted defeat with a 28-23 loss at then-No. 9 Winston-Salem State in the season opener. The triumph marked the third-straight win for the Golden Eagles (6-1) who have won 10 of their last 11 games since a 52-14 home loss to the Braves last season in Charleston, W.Va.
UNCP quarterback Luke Charles threw for 273 yards on 27-of-50 passing to lead the Black & Gold who was plagued by 12 dropped passes on the day. Junior Elliott Powell carried the ball 19 times for 93 yards and a pair of scores for the Braves as well.
Roberts, the nation's 17th-leading rusher heading into the weekend, carried the ball 26 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns, completed a 31-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and also hauled in four passes for 35 yards. He also posted kick returns of 100 and 17 yards for the Golden Eagles. Quarterback Maurice Leak threw for 150 yards on 16-of-20 passing for Charleston as well.
"Charleston played a very good game," said UNCP head coach Pete Shinnick. "They were extremely physical, and we didn't handle that very well on either side of the ball. I am probably more disappointed in the way we played in the first half more than anything else. We didn't play with a lot of energy or excitement, and that played over into our punt and kickoff coverage. "
Following a missed field goal attempt on UNCP's initial drive of the game, Roberts gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good on a 22-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left to play in the opening period. UC answered a 28-yard field goal by Connor Haskins with Roberts' momentum-changing kickoff return seconds later, and raced out to a 21-3 lead on Ahmed Shakoor's 38-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown in the waning seconds of the opening stanza.
The Braves would get back into the game with a pair of touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the second quarter, but Charleston answered back with two scores of their own, including Leak's 31-yard touchdown pass to Shaq Williams with 49 ticks left before the halftime whistle, to carry a 35-16 advantage into the locker rooms.
UNCP chipped into its deficit on Charles's 19-yard touchdown pass to Jason Perry in the third quarter, but Charleston got a 3-yard scoring plunge from Leak in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, as well as a game-sealing interception with five minutes left, to negate the comeback attempt.
The Braved will continue a three-game home stand on October 20 when they suit up to host region rival Carson-Newman (4-2) in a 2 p.m. contest at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. The Eagles were a 52-10 Homecoming winner over North Greenville earlier Saturday.
