Braves Top Century Mark, Rout St. Andrews At Zaxby's Tip Off Classic

Box Score

FLORENCE, S.C. – UNCP shot better than 56 percent, posted a +32 disparity in the rebounding column and got double-figure scoring efforts from five different players to key a 106-59 rout of St. Andrews at the Francis Marion-hosted Zaxby's Tip Off Clazzic on Sunday afternoon in the Smith University Center.

The victory marked the second-straight win for the Braves (3-3) who reached the .500 plateau for the second time this season heading into a three-game stretch in Pembroke. It was the most lopsided series loss for St. Andrews (0-6) who was coming off a 132-120 loss to tournament host Francis Marion on Saturday evening. The triumph also marked the most lopsided win for the Braves since a 131-49 throttling of Johnson & Wales on Nov. 14, 2010.

George Blakeney recorded his second-straight double-double performance for the Braves with 19 points and 16 rebounds, while newcomer Jihad Wright accomplished the same feat with 19 points and 11 boards. Redshirt freshman Quamain Rose added 17 points, Alex Bradley chipped in 11 points and six assists, and sophomore Reggie Cobia tallied a career-best 10 points off the bench. K.J. Cooper and James McGhee scored nine points apiece for the Black & Gold as well.

St. Andrews, who shot just 31 percent from the field, got double-figure scoring from three players, including a team-best 12 points from Kenton Chan-Man. D.J. Carnegie and Clavontae Brown added 11 points each.

The Braves shot nearly 60 percent in the second half and had pushed a 26-point halftime lead out to 59-28 just three minutes into the latter stanza. UNCP padded its lead out to 84-44 on a Blakeney layup at the 9:04 mark, and then pushed its lead out to 104-53 on Wright's tip in with 1:45 left to play.

UNCP scored 21-straight points amid a nearly six-minute scoring drought by the Knights in the opening half. Over a span of five minutes and 59 seconds, the Braves shot 78 percent (7-of-9) from the field, including a deadly 5-for-6 success rate from the perimeter. The Black & Gold took a 21-point lead, 29-8, on Brandon Winford's tip-in with 11:18 left before the intermission, and led by as much as 29 points, 43-14, on a Bradley layup at the 4:45 mark.

The Braves out-rebounded St. Andrews 27-11 in the first half, including a 12-0 edge on the boards through the first seven minutes of the contest. The Knights collected their first rebound of the game – a team rebound – off of a missed jumper by Bradley with 12:52 remaining. UNCP also connected on nine 3-point attempts in the first half as well.

The Braves will lift the lid on the home portion of their 2012-13 slate on Thursday when the club opens up a three-game home stand against Barber-Scotia (1-7) inside the English E. Jones Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
