Box Score PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's basketball team completed the season sweep of Peach Belt Conference East Division rival Francis Marion, 62-52, on Wednesday evening - the first time it has accomplished that feat since the 2006-07 season.
Freshman Jazmine Kemp totaled her second double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Lady Braves (12-11, 9-6 PBC) along with snatching two steals and dishing out a trio of assists. Senior DeDe Cotten notched the game-high 18 points and was shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
Senior Domonique Washington helped the squad to 16 total steals as she captured six of her own, while Cotten collected four. Newcomer Amelia Partin registered a career-best with 11 points and she knocked down three 3-pointers, while Cotten drained four.
UNCP and Francis Marion (8-15, 3-12) were nearly equal on the court as the Lady Patriots shot 34.7 percent from the field and pulled down 37 rebounds, while UNCP shot 34.0 percent and grabbed 36 rebounds. UNCP forced Francis Marion to commit 24 turnovers and held the team to a foul shot percentage of 59.1 percent.
"I am very proud of the girls because our effort was great even though we were short-handed," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "It was a good team win and I thought we played girls a lot of minutes."
The Lady Braves opened the game with a 12-2 run with more than 15 minutes to go in the first half and pulled the largest lead of 15 points with 5:26 on the clock as Jasmine Hairston nailed a foul shot. Francis Marion used the final five minutes to cut the UNCP lead to seven points.
The Lady Patriots cut the lead to three points coming out of the locker room, but was unable to take the lead from UNCP as the Lady Braves ended the game with Washington at the charity stripe. The Black and Gold posted 24 points on Francis Marion turnovers and 15 points on second-chance shots.
Simone Trice was the leader in scoring for the Lady Patriots with 12 points, while Carmella Thompson collected 11 rebounds and totaled five assists.
The Black and Gold will play host to Armstrong Atlantic (13-10, 7-8) on Saturday in the English E. Jones Center. The game is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the men's game following the conclusion of the women's. Admission prices are $5 for adults and $2 for children 18 years of age and younger. UNCP students are admitted free with a valid Braves Card.
