Box Score PEMBROKE – The UNCP women's basketball team not only posted a 43-point victory over Flagler in the final game at home, but the squad registered a new school record for the largest margin of victory in Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday afternoon, 72-29.
UNCP (14-11, 11-6 PBC) recorded the second-highest number of wins in conference action since joining the NCAA Division II in 1992 and just behind the 2001-02 season with 12 victories. The game also marked the most wins in conference action under head coach John Haskins as the Lady Braves have guaranteed themselves an overall winning record this season.
Junior Amelia Partin totaled a game-high 23 points to set a new career-record in scoring for the newcomer, while freshman Jazmine Kemp collected 16 points and senior Domonique Washington had 15. Partin was 8-for-12 from the field and 5-of-9 from the perimeter. Washington led on the boards with eight rebounds, while Kemp and Partin each pulled down seven.
Flagler (3-21, 2-15) controlled the lead for the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Black and Gold held a 10-point lead at the half, 30-20. In the second half, Flagler knocked down its 26th point of the game at the 14:54 mark and were held scoreless for more than 12 minutes until Charlsea Owen's 3-pointer with 2:13 left in the game.
During Flagler's dry spell, UNCP went on a 25-point run, while the Lady Saints missed 19 shots and committed eight turnovers. UNCP allowed Flagler only nine points in the second half as the Lady Braves scored 42. The Black and Gold scored 26 points on 17 Flagler turnovers and 22 points in the paint.
UNCP out-rebounded the Lady Saints 47-40 and shot 42.9 percent from the field in comparison to 17.5 percent by Flagler. UNCP was 30.4 percent from behind the arc and 73.9 percent in foul shooting.
"I think the winning record is a testament to the girls in the program, and when we looked at the year coming in, we were worried about what we were losing," said Haskins. "We felt like we could be as good or better, but it would take us a while and I think that has been the case here and finally we are understanding the offense and the girls are playing together and getting experience."
Flagler's leading scorer, Latesha Johnson posted nine points, while Jen Knurek led the team with eight rebounds.
The Lady Braves have secured a third place finish in the PBC East Division behind nationally-ranked USC Aiken and Lander, and a fourth place finish overall.
UNCP will play its final game of the regular season on Saturday when the squad travels to Greenwood, S.C., to battle PBC East Division opponent No. 18 Lander (19-5, 14-2) in Horne Arena. Tip off has been slated for 1:30 p.m. with the UNCP men following the conclusion of the women's game at approximately 3:30 p.m.
