Men's Soccer Deadlocked After 110 Minutes Of Play Against North Georgia

Box Score

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Junior Sam Miles broke a scoreless deadlock with a valuable goal in the 33rd minute to put the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team ahead for nearly 30 minutes, but Daniel Bowlt's team-leading fifth goal of the season in the second half helped North Georgia forge a 1-1 tie with the Braves in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex.

The draw marked the first of the season for both squads and resulted in a winless week for UNCP (6-5-1, 3-3-1 PBC) and North Georgia (3-11-1, 1-4-1).

Miles lifted the Braves ahead of North Georgia at the 32:33 mark for his fifth goal of the season off the cross pass by newcomer Kevin Vigebo and knocked the shot in the net on the left side past the Nighthawks' keeper Kris Alonzo.

Bowlt equalized the game off a 30-yard direct kick that curved into the goal in the 62nd minute past UNCP's goalkeeper Ryan Hanson on the second shot of the second half for the Nighthawks, which sent the game into double overtime.

The Black and Gold possessed an 11-3 shot disparity heading into the half and held the Nighthawks shotless for the first 22 minutes of action, as well as another 11-minute stretch between their second and third shots of the half. UNCP rattled off three shots in the first 14 minutes and proceeded with an onslaught of four shots in final five minutes of the half trailing the score.

UNCP exited the half with five shots in the first eight minutes and continued to outshoot North Georgia with an 8-3 advantage going into overtime. The Nighthawks sent off three quick shots in a span of less than a minute to start the first overtime period and another at the 99:35 mark, while UNCP was outshot for the first time after only logging two shots in the first overtime.

Sophomore Rico Laitinen attempted one of the two shots in the final 10 minutes of the contest just 31 seconds into the second overtime, but was unable to connect with the goal as his attempt soared above the net. Each team claimed two shots in double overtime, but none resulted in the go-aheada goal.

Hanson gathered two saves during his 110 minutes between the posts for a 6-5-1 record in goal for the Braves, while Kris Alonzo collected nine saves with five of those coming in the second half alone.

Miles led the Braves with six shots, while Laitinen and Reece Rooney each added four, defender Jeff MacDonald took three shots, and Ricardo Chavez and Adam Smith gathered two apiece to assist in UNCP's 23 total shots on the night. The Nighthawks were paced by Manuel Hernandez with four shots, while Bowlt and Tyler Daly each had two as North Georgia managed 12 shots during the contest.

The Braves will return home to host regional opponent Mount Olive (2-12-0) on Monday at Varsity Grounds with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. Admission to all 2013 home soccer matches is free.
