AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Zach Shanahan knocked in the only score on the contest in the 67th minute as the third-seeded Flagler Saints ousted the sixth-seeded UNC Pembroke men's soccer team from the Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over the Braves on Tuesday evening at Saints Field.
The setback kept the Braves (8-8-1) winless in the all-time series with the Saints (9-5-3) and officially signaled the end of the 2013 campaign for UNCP who will bid farewell to five seniors – Daniel Bougt, Payne Clark, Paul Freeman, Ryan Hanson and Jeff MacDonald. With the victory, Flagler advanced through to Friday's semifinal round where it will face seventh-seeded Montevallo at 8 p.m. in Evans, Ga.
Despite outshooting the Saints, UNCP was unable to connect on its 13 shots with MacDonald leading with a game-high four shots, while Sam Miles logged three and Daniel Bougt and James Casserly each posted two.
"This game is cruel sometimes," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "I thought that we were the better team tonight and deserved to win. We gave an outstanding effort and I am very proud of this team because of that."
Caleb Austin dished out the lone assist on Shanahan's eighth goal of the season on a shot from the left across the box to the far post at the 66:23 mark. Stephen Pratt claimed three shots and Marco Warren posted two, while six others added one each to total 11 Flagler shots.
Both squads held each other scoreless throughout the first 45 minutes of action with UNCP notching six shots, four coming in the final 17 minutes, as the UNCP defense denied the Saints their final shot of the half at the 22:40 mark.
Adam Smith and Bougt drilled two shots in the 65th minute that were blocked and saved, respectively, leading into Flagler's lead, but the offensive charge of the Braves came up short in the second half.
The Braves got a three-save outing from Hanson despite the solo score, while Flagler's netminder Camp Bissell registering a trio of saves as well.
The match brought about 21 combined fouls with the Braves posting three yellow cards and 11 fouls throughout the 90 minutes.
