INDIANAPOLIS – Daniel Ownbey registered bonus point wins in all three trips to the mat, while three of his teammates advanced through to Sunday's consolation quarterfinal round, to help lead the 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team to a 10th place standing after day one of the 35th Midwest Classic inside Nicoson Hall on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.

Fourth-ranked Newberry sits atop the team leaderboard with 84 points heading into Sunday's final day of the prestigious event. McKendree is 3-1/2 points back (80.5) in second place, while Maryville (75-1/2 points), host-Indianapolis (67) and Upper Iowa (65) round out the top 5.

Ownbey will battle Indianapolis's Justin Kieffer in Sunday's semifinal round after barely breaking a sweat in Saturday's 141-pound championship bracket. The two-time all-American tallied second-period pins in each of his first two trips to the mat, and then turned in a 15-4 major decision over Mt. St. Joe's Wayne Black in the championship quarterfinals.

Blaze Shade, a 2013 national qualifier for the Black & Gold, dropped just one of his four matches on the day at 174 pounds, with his lone setback coming in the form of a tight 2-0 decision to second-ranked Elliott Copeland of Western State. Shade would rebound with two wins in the consolation bracket, including a 9-1 major decision over Lindsey Wilson's Erick Gomez late Saturday. Shade will lock horns with Limestone's Tanner Saraceno in Sunday's wrestleback quarterfinals.

Brach Walker turned some heads on Saturday in the 184-pound bracket, registering two victories, as well as a close 7-3 setback to fifth-ranked Blake Sorensen of Upper Iowa. Walker registered a close 7-6 victory over East Stroudsburg's Luke DeLuise in his opening match of the day, lost to Sorensen and then upended Eddie Bernal of the University of the Cumberlands late Saturday. Walker will take on Newberry's Jared Holliday in Sunday's consolation quarterfinals.

Heavyweight standout Chris Giddens lost an overtime matchup with Coker's Austin Akin in his Saturday opener, but rebounded with three victories in the consolation bracket, including a 5-2 decision over Indianapolis's Evan Wooding in Saturday's nightcap. Giddens will get a rematch with Akins in Sunday's wrestleback action.

Sunday's wrestling action inside Nicoson Hall is set to get underway at 9 a.m. CDT.
