Braves Break PBC Wins Record With Win Over Flagler

Box Score

PEMBROKE – UNCP scored 22 points off of 15 turnovers by visiting Flagler and used double-digit runs in each half en route to its school record-breaking 12th Peach Belt Conference victory of the season with a 97-83 trouncing of the Saints on Saturday afternoon in the English E. Jones Center.

The triumph gave the Braves (19-8, 12-5 PBC) their 19th victory of the season – the most for a UNCP club in the NCAA Division II era (1992-Present) in Pembroke, and the most wins since the 1990-91 club finished with a 27-5 clip. Flagler (11-14, 7-11) has now lost seven of its last 10 outings, despite capturing an 83-76 win over the Braves earlier this month in St. Augustine, Fla.

Shahmel Brackett (1,547 career points) moved into 10th place on the PBC's all-time scoring list with a game-high 29 points, while George Blakeney cashed in on his league-leading 13th double-double of the season with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Quamain Rose tallied 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor, while also dishing out a career-best nine assists as well.

Ante Gospic put up a team-best 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds on the way to his 11th double-double of the season for the Saints, who got double-digit scoring performances from three other players as well. Flagler, who became one of just four teams this season to avoid getting out-rebounded by the Braves earlier this month (39-39), was outdone on the boards Saturday by a 47-33 disparity.

The Saints got to within six points on two occasions in the second half, but Alex Bradley's 3-pointer with 6:19 to play sparked the hosts on a game-changing 17-4 run that would inevitably give them a 91-68 advantage on Brackett's trey four minutes later. The Braves emptied their bench with 73 seconds left in regulation, before Flagler scored the game's final seven points to provide the final.

The squads went neck-and-neck for the first 16 minutes of the contest but, after Gospic hit a short jumper to tie the game for the eighth time with 4:28 left before the intermission, Blakeney's layup on the other end was the first of 13-straight unanswered points by the Braves heading into the locker rooms.

UNCP will close out the road portion of its 2012-13 slate on Wednesday when the Braves make the short trip to Florence, S.C., to lock horns with PBC East rival Francis Marion (11-12, 6-10) in the back half of a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader inside the Smith University Center.
