Box Score HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker scored a pair of runs in each of the second and fourth innings to take a 4-1 advantage into the fifth, but 23rd-ranked UNCP rallied for four unanswered runs, including three with two outs in the eighth, to upend the Cobras, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Tom J. New Field.
The triumph snapped a two-game skid for UNCP (12-3) who also evened up its road record this season at two wins apiece. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Cobras (10-4) who fell to 6-20 in the all-time series with the Braves.
Newcomer Daniel Fraga drove in a run and scored once on a 3-for-4 hitting line for the Braves, who also got multi-hit days from three other players as well. Jordan Edgerton doubled twice and scored once on a 2-for-4 outing, while Zade Denton doubled and scored to highlight a 2-for-4 plate performance. Dalton Knight singled twice and walked once on a 2-for-3 day as well.
Ernie Kirkwood walked, doubled and scored once on a 2-for-3 showing for Coker, while T.J. Gizckowski walked twice and scored once on a 0-for-2 tally.
Logan Cook (1-0) struck out four and yielded just one hit across four innings of relief to pick up his first collegiate win, while Patrick McMahon made his debut as the closer for the Braves by earning his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth frame. Reliever Tyler Witzel (3-1) saddled his first loss of the season for Coker after allowing one hit and the go-ahead run in the eighth. He also struck out two.
UNCP took a quick lead on Edgerton's sac fly with no outs in the first, but Coker took the lead in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by Frank Suarez, as well as a successful double steal. The Cobras would stretch their advantage out to 4-1 with two more runs in the fourth, but that would inevitably be the last runs of the game for the hosts.
The Braves cut into their deficit on Fraga's one-out RBI single in the fifth, and then loaded the bases with one out in the eighth to set the table for a three-run double by Drew Cole two batters later.
UNCP will open up a seven-game home stand this weekend when they suit up to battle Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia College (7-5, 1-2 PBC) in three-game series at Sammy Cox Field. The teams will open up the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, and close out the weekend with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.
