Braves Rally To Finish Off Sweep Of Georgia Southwestern

Box Score

AMERICUS, Ga. – Les Cromer's RBI single with one out in the fourth inning helped Georgia Southwestern grab a quick 3-0 lead, but visiting and 25th-ranked UNCP rallied for seven unanswered runs, including four in the 11th inning, to finish off a weekend sweep of the Hurricanes, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon.

The win gave the Braves (20-6, 9-6 PBC) their first Peach Belt Conference series sweep in nearly a calendar year, as well as their ninth-straight win over Georgia Southwestern. It was the seventh loss in the last eight outings for the Hurricanes (7-19, 2-12), who last tasted a win over UNCP on April 6, 2008, in Pembroke.

Drew Cole homered and drove in four runs on a 2-for-5 day at the plate for UNCP, while Victor Zecca came off the bench to record a 3-for-3 outing, including a clutch pinch-hit double in the seventh. Zade Denton scored twice and drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th to highlight a 2-for-5 performance as well. Stephen Eldridge drove in a run on a 3-for-5 hitting line to lead the hosts, who also got a perfect 2-for-2 day from Cromer.

Patrick McMahon (4-0) snared his second win in four days from the bullpen, this time picking up the victory after walking two and yielding a pair of hits in three innings from the mound. The win overshadowed an outstanding outing from right-hander Dale Innes who inherited a 3-0 deficit with two on and one out in the fourth and did not allow a run in 4-2/3 innings of relief. Ryan Mosley (0-2) recorded just one out in the 11th but was tagged with the loss anyway after allowing four earned runs on three hits and three free passes (2 BB, HBP).

Georgia Southwestern scratched the scoreboard for two runs in the third and then padded its advantage out to a trio of runs with Cromer's knock in the fourth. UNCP singled in each of its first two at-bats in the first, but did not record another hit until the seventh when Denton's one-out triple sparked a 3-run rally by the visitors that tied the game back up. The momentum-changing inning was aided by a RBI single from Cole and a sac fly from Chad Whitehead as well.

Josh Sanders triple down the right field line with two outs in the 10th nearly gave the hosts the walk-off win, but a perfect relay by right fielder Ben Schmucker, first baseman Brett Huffman and catcher Max Gagnon nixed Sanders attempting to turn the knock into an inside-the-park homer.

Huffman and Schmucker both reached via consecutive one-out walks in the 11th and Denton provided the game-winning RBI on a hit to centerfield. Cole's 3-run homer with the next at-bat would provide a trio of insurance runs.

The Braves will continue their eight-game road trip on Tuesday when they head to Wilson for a rare midweek contest against Barton (8-13). First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Fleming Stadium.
