Braves Win Slugfest With Lander, Advance To PBC Semifinals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Fifth-seeded and 16th-ranked UNCP scored four runs in a key sixth-inning outburst and used a key relief outing from southpaw Patrick McMahon to oust fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked Lander from the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a 16-11 win over the Bearcats on Friday afternoon.

The result moves the Braves (38-15) into the semifinal round for the second time in three years where they will need to beat seventh-seeded Georgia College (31-17) twice in order to advance to Sunday's winner-take-all championship game. Friday evening's semifinal contest is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. first pitch.

The loss put a serious dent into the postseason aspirations for Lander (35-16) who will now wait out the weekend before learning of their postseason fate via an NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 10 p.m.

Daniel Fraga scored three times and drove in a career-best five runs on a 3-for-6 showing for UNCP, while Ben Schmucker homered for the third time this season to highlight a 3-for-4 hitting line. Jordan Edgerton (3-for-6), Max Gagnon (2-for-3), Brett Huffman (2-for-5) and Drew Cole (2-for-5) turned in multi-hit outings for the Braves as well.

Graham Ramos doubled and drove in three runs on a 2-for-3 day at the plate for Lander, while Jeff May, Weston Lawing and Chris Hyatt each recorded 2-for-3 plate performances.

McMahon (5-0) kept his perfect record intact by striking out four and allowing just one hit in 4-1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Braves. Kyle Tate (2-3), the fourth of five pitchers on the day for the Bearcats, took the loss after surrendering six earned runs on seven hits and a trio of walks in just 2-1/3 innings from the hill.

Lander scored a trio of runs on three hits and as many walks to grab an 11-9 advantage after five, but the Braves sent their entire order to the plate in the decisive sixth inning and took the lead for good on Fraga's two-run single with one out. RBI knocks by Gagnon, Edgerton and Huffman in the eighth would provide some insurance runs.
