Catawba Rallies To Upend Football

Box Score

PEMBROKESeth Owen's 17-yard scoring strike to B.J. Bunn gave the UNC Pembroke football team a 14-6 edge early in the second period, but Catawba scored 24 of the game's final 27 points en route to a 30-17 win over the Braves on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

It was the fourth-straight loss for the Braves (1-5) who will close out a three-game home stand against region nemesis Newberry next week in Pembroke. The triumph helped Catawba (4-3) snap a two-game series losing streak, while also giving the Indians their second win in the last three weeks.

Bunn tallied a school record 11 receptions for 100 yards to pace the UNCP offense which used a two-quarterback system throughout the day. Reggie Pinner threw for 121 yards and a touchdown on 15-of-24 passing, while Owen registered just three incomplete passes (11-of-14) and amassed 65 passing yards and a touchdown.

Mike Sheehan rushed for 80 yards (13 carries) and a touchdown for Catawba, while also throwing for 186 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-24 passing. Carlos Tarrats hauled in four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown for the Indians as well.

Blake Hickman recorded a team-best 11 tackles (5 solo) for UNCP's Code Black defense. Catawba turned in 10 tackles for loss in the contest, including a trio of sacks. Jason Taylor led the visitors with a game-best 13 stops (7 solo).

Mark McDaniel picked off Pinner on the second play from scrimmage and returned the interception 28 yards for a touchdown to help the visitors scratch the scoreboard first, but UNCP scored touchdowns on each of its next two possessions to take the momentum back.

Catawba would take back all of the momentum on the ensuing drive, however, as the Indians marched 69 yards in three plays before Reid Carlton punched it in from one yard out. The score would be the first of 24-straight points by the visitors who eventually took a 30-14 advantage on Sheehan's 40-yard touchdown pass to Tarrats with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
