Box Score ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Senior Sam Miles scored the lone goal for the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team in the 78th minute, but a pair of earlier goals by host Flagler was enough to hold off the Braves' comeback attempt in securing a 2-1 victory on Saturday evening at Saints Field in Peach Belt Conference action.
Flagler (5-3-1, 3-2-0 PBC) extended its unbeaten streak to eight games in the series with the Braves (2-4-3, 1-2-2) and have had the last five matchups in the series be decided by one goal or less. The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for UNCP, while the Saints stretched its winning streak to two games.
Despite out-shooting the Saints in the first half, 4-3, Flagler took the 1-0 lead at the half. Eamonn Moore chipped in the first goal the assist by Juan Membreno as he served the ball into the box for the header. Just 18 seconds out of halftime, the Saints added the insurance goal as Thomas Gallitz used a cross pass to Jean Vega for the shot into the right bottom corner of the goal.
Again in the second half, the Braves railed seven shots compared to Flagler's three and answered back at the 77:19 mark with senior Brett Luccia sending the pass form the far left post to Miles for a touch in into the bottom corner of the net.
"I'm incredibly proud of our team for keeping their composure under very difficult circumstances," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson.
Freshman goalkeeper Kenneth Perkinson registered a pair of saves, while Lex Craggs of Flagler grabbed four saves. Three yellow cards were given, two of which went to UNCP, but Flagler took 18 of the 32 fouls awarded.
The Braves drilled four of their seven shots in the final stanza just five minutes shy of the goal and put up just one more before the final buzzer as Reece Rooney's attempt was halted by Craggs.
Kevin Vigebo, Miles and Luccia each took two shots for UNCP, while Triston Hall had a pair for Flagler.
The Braves will look to Wednesday when they travel to Greenwood, S.C. for a mid-week matchup against Lander (5-2-1, 1-1-1) set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
