GRU Augusta Rallies Past Volleyball, 3-1

AUGUSTA, Ga. –
Using a .419 hitting percentage in the first set, the UNC Pembroke volleyball team took set one, but the GRU Augusta Jaguars rallied back in the following sets for a 3-1 victory of the Braves in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon in the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The loss was the fourth-straight for UNCP (8-12, 0-7 PBC), while GRU Augusta (14-4, 5-2) extended its winning-streak to four games. The set scores were 25-16, 19-25, 16-25 and 19-25.

Nicole Mathews, Jada Vernon and Sabrina Gonzalez each registered double-doubles for UNCP. Mathews slammed down 13 kills, while Vernon added 12 and Gonzalez tallied 27 assists. Both Mathews and Gonzalez shared a team-best 13 digs, while Vernon had 10. The Braves out-blocked the Jaguars with 22 block assists as Mathews, Mallory Davis and Kirsten Mills carried a game-high four each.

GRU Augusta out-hit the Braves 58-38 and finished the game with a .280 hitting percentage compared to UNCP's .234 hitting percentage. The Braves ended the game with eight services aces as Mathews led the team with four, but it was not enough with the Jaguars tallying 10 services aces behind Maggie Darling with five.

The Jaguars had four players with double-digit kills as Kristen Koch held a game-high 17 kills and Catherine Desilveste posted 20 digs throughout the contest.

The Braves fought through a deficit in the beginning of set one and collected seven-straight points on serving by Mathews with six kills by the Black and Gold to take the lead and the win in the opening set. However, in the next three sets, GRU Augusta opened the matches with strong serving and denied UNCP the opportunity to take the lead for the 3-1 victory.

UNCP will return home for a tri-match with Flagler (7-9, 3-4) and Elizabeth City State (5-10) on Sunday with the PBC match against the Saints leading off the day at 1 p.m. inside the English E. Jones Center.
