RALEIGH – The 11th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team dropped a pair of dual meets to NCAA Division I foes, but highlighted its day with a 22-13 victory over sixth-ranked (NAIA) Lindsey Wilson on Sunday at the Wolfpack Duals in Raleigh.
UNCP (2-2) had its school record 13-match win streak snapped with a 25-15 setback to American in its opening match of the day, but rebounded with a win over the perennial NAIA powerhouse. The Black & Gold closed out the event with a 29-9 loss to host NC State.
The Braves used an injury default victory by Hayden Fry in his 149-pound matchup with American's Cole Moseley to knot the team score up at nine points apiece, but the Eagles won four of the final six individual matches, including three bonus-point wins, to key the 25-15 victory.
Nursing a 16-13 advantage against Lindsey Wilson, the Black & Gold got key wins from Stuart Nadeau at 197 pounds and fifth-ranked Chris Giddens in the heavyweight matchup to fuel the 22-13 victory. The victory avenged last season's 22-16 loss to the Blue Raiders at the Wolfpack Duals and gave the Braves a 2-1 edge in the series with Lindsey Wilson.
N.C. State, who fell just short in a 16-15 loss to seventh-ranked Nebraska on Saturday, recorded four bonus-point victories to key its 29-9 win over the Braves. The Wolfpack posted pins in the first two matches of the contest to take a 12-0 lead on the team scoreboard, before defending national champion Daniel Ownbey got the Braves on the board with a 10-3 decision over Chris Wilkes. N.C. State would respond by tallying major decisions in both the 149- and 157-pound bouts, and then padded its lead out to 23-3 on Max Rohskopf's 6-3 decision over Juan Stimpson.
The Braves will be back in action again on December 13-14 when they make the long trek to Indianapolis, Ind., to take part in the prestigious Midwest Classic.
