CARROLLTON, Ga. - Both West Georgia and the visiting UNC Pembroke volleyball team notched 43 kills, but the Wolves were more dominate in service aces and at the net with 10 block assists en route to a 3-0 victory over the Braves on Saturday evening inside the Coliseum.
The Braves (16-22) closed out the 2014 campaign on a three-game losing streak, while West Georgia (7-23) both opened and closed the season with wins over UNCP for the series sweep. The set scores were 25-23, 25-14 and 27-25.
Freshman Ka'asha Jefferies claimed a game-high 20 digs, while junior Nicole Mathews tallied 11 kills and 13 digs, and sophomore Sabrina Gonzalez logged 36 assists and 11 digs. Junior Cecilia Brandon tallied the only services aces for UNCP as well as 10 kills, while sophomore Caroline Pridgen registered nine kills and Jada Vernon added eight.
In the first set, both squads paced each other, but serving by Jefferies tipped the advantage to the Braves, 23-21, however, the Wolves snatched up the next four points on three UNCP errors to take the set.
West Georgia ran away in the second set following a tied score at the 10-10 mark and used a 15-4 run to take the 2-0 lead, before using a 5-1 run in the third set to outlast the Braves in the final points for the 3-0 win.
