Box Score 2 PEMBROKE - The visiting Mount Olive Trojans brought around two runs in the eighth inning on a base hit to cap off game one of the doubleheader with the UNC Pembroke softball team, 3-2, on Monday afternoon at LRA Field in regional action.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for UNCP (4-3), while Mount Olive (3-4) ended its three-game losing streak with the extra innings victory. The Lady Braves are now 1-2 in extra inning situations.
Five different Lady Braves grabbed hits including Whitney Jackson, Taylor Cloninger, Caitlin Steel, Megan Hillard and Karlee Wilson. Both Cloninger and Hillard totaled UNCP's pair of RBI. Mount Olive finished the game with seven hits, as three different batters collected two hits with Jennifer Jones going 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Senior Natalie Klemann (1-1) suffered the loss after going all eight innings with three strikeouts and a trio of unearned runs. Madison Johnston (2-1) clinched the win for the Trojans after allowing two runs (one earned), four strikeouts and two walks in her complete game.
Mount Olive posted the first run of the game in the fourth inning, but the Lady Braves answered back as Steel pushed the ball to deep center field for a double before rounding the bases on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Holland and scoring on Hillard's sacrifice fly.
With a tied score after seven innings, Mount Olive opened up the eighth with two scores on two singles, a pair of sacrifice flies and an error. In the bottom of the eighth, UNCP brought in Jackson on second with a sacrifice fly by Cloninger, however, the Lady Braves came up short by one run as Mount Olive claimed the win in game one.
