HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Two runs in the third inning including a homer by Coker's Stacy Burr pushed the Cobras past the UNC Pembroke softball team, 2-0, for the series split of Saturday's doubleheader at Saleeby-Stokes Field.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for UNCP (8-4), while the win halted the five-game losing streak for Coker (5-6).
Junior Brea Hartley and senior Shelby Holland tallied the only two hits for the Lady Braves, while Coker notched four hits throughout the game including runs by Ashlee Ellen and Burr.
UNCP pitcher Selena Ashley (5-1) suffered her first loss of the season after six full innings in the middle for the Lady Braves. In her 23 batters faced, she walked three and struck out a trio of batters as well as gave up the two earned runs. Jessica Koumas (1-0) clinched the victory for Coker after shutting out UNCP in seven innings.
Right fielder Whitney Jackson reached first on a walk in the opening at-bat of the game, but was left on third as the inning ended. In the bottom of the third, Coker led off the inning with a homer to center field to register the game-winning run, but three batters later, Ellen reached on a base on balls and was brought home on a double to left field by Tayler Barcomb.
Shelby Holland attempted a comeback to put UNCP on the board with a single up the middle, but was left on third when the inning ended.
UNCP will be back in action on Wednesday when the Lady Braves host Wingate (9-1) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.
