West Georgia Holds Off Softball In Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE – West Georgia plated six unearned runs on five errors by the UNC Pembroke softball team, but had to hold off a seventh-inning rally by the hosts en route to forging a twinbill split with a 7-6 victory over the Braves on Wednesday evening at LRA Field.

The Lady Braves (1-1) split the series with the Wolves (1-1) and are now 2-3 in the all-time series between the two schools.

Junior Brea Hartley logged her first homer of the season in the seventh and went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI as she drove in her additional run in the fifth on a single. Sophomore Morgan Davis also added two runs, while senior Taylor Cloninger collected two RBI on the team's first home run of the campaign in the first inning over the center field fence bringing in Davis and herself.

Mackenzie Arlt went 2-for five with a run and RBI, while Nicole Yancey scored twice, tallied an RBI and finished the contest 2-for-3 from the plate for West Georgia. Heather Crow was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Senior Katy Austin (0-1) started off the contest and completed two innings before being relieved by junior Selena Ashley who finished out the final five innings. Austin gave up five runs (one earned) on seven hits, while Ashley allowed three hits and two unearned runs with three strikeouts.

Megan Roberts (1-0) grabbed the win with 4-2/3 innings completed in the middle, allowed five unearned runs on five hits and eight strikeouts, before Courtney Gunby stepped in for the save in the final 2-1/3 innings. Gunby struck out a trio of batters, allowed three hits and one earned run for the Wolves.

Despite giving up the first run of the game, UNCP advanced in the bottom of the first with a 2-1 lead, but suffered a four-run inning with three errors committed in the same time frame. Each team posted two runs in the fifth and with a solo homer by Hartley in the seventh to inch the Lady Braves to within one run, but West Georgia edged out on the defensive front for the win.

The squad will be back on the field on Thursday when it hosts Concord in a noon contest followed by No. 2 Kutztown at 2 p.m. in Pembroke.
