Men's Soccer Battles Montevallo To Scoreless Deadlock

Box Score

PEMBROKE -
After 110 minutes of scoreless action and all 20 minutes of overtime playing down a man, the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team ended the match with Montevallo in scoreless deadlock on Saturday evening in Peach Belt Conference action as freshman Kenneth Perkinson notched six saves for the Braves.

This was the second draw of the season for UNCP (0-3-2, 0-1-1 PBC) who collected its first point in conference play, while the Falcons (2-1-2, 0-0-1) also recorded their second-consecutive tie. The series between the two schools has ended in overtime four out of the seven meetings dating back to 2009.

Perkinson began the contest with just one save in the first half, but registered two quick shots in the second half coming nearly four minutes out of halftime and another two less than two minutes into second overtime. The Black and Gold defense immobilize the Falcons' offense as 10 total shots were unable to register at least one goal.

"I was happy because the guys played well," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "I think we put a complete game together for the first time this year. I thought we were the better team and that we dominated the possession, but unfortunately we didn't take that chance."

The Braves notched 17 total shots with Reece Rooney and Sam Miles who led the team with four shots. Both Brett Luccia and Nathan Legge added three shots, while three others posted one shot apiece. Srdjan Dujkovic led the Falcons with three shots, while Jeffrey Hessenberger chipped in two.

Despite being outshot in the final 10 minutes of overtime 3-1, the Braves held strong through regulation and the first overtime to close out the game outshooting Montevallo. The Braves rushed the Montevallo goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation with four shots including two by Luccia and proceeded to attempt another four chance on goal with Rooney leading the charge.

At the 106:07 mark, Rooney drilled a shot at the top of the box, but goalkeeper Yannic Horn picked up his fifth and final save of the night.

The match saw a combined 30 fouls, four yellow cards and one red card leading to UNCP playing down one man for the final 23:24 minutes of the game.

UNCP will continue with its home streak on Wednesday when the Braves play host to the Barton Bulldogs (5-1) in a 7 p.m. tilt at Varsity Grounds.
