AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 14th-ranked UNC Pembroke men's basketball team rallied back from an 18-point deficit early in the second half to take the lead with 1:28 remaining, but a pair of free throws by Keshun Sherrill with 1.8 seconds left helped GRU Augusta upset the Braves, 57-55, on Wednesday evening in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The setback snapped a four-game road win streak for the Braves (17-3, 8-3 PBC) who have now dropped two of their last three contests by a combined five points. The Jaguars (15-5, 8-3) have now won five of their last six outings.

Ben Jacobs came off the bench to score 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting and lead the way for UNCP who shot 55 percent from the field in the second half after turning in 22 percent shooting in the opening period. Griffin Pittman added 13 points for the visitors, while Brandon Winford cashed in on his 14th career double-double with 11 points and as many boards.

Sherrill registered a game-high 20 points for GRU Augusta who was held more than 20 points below its season scoring average. The Jaguars also registered season-lows in both points and field goal percentage (35.2).

Keith Crump's 3-pointer at the 16:02 mark in the second half helped the hosts stake claim to a 38-20 lead, but the Braves used a 19-5 run to pull to within two on Pittman's trey with 5:06 left, and then took a 53-51 lead on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Jacobs with 88 seconds to play. A 3-pointer by Sherrill on the ensuing possession, as well as a free throw with 31 seconds left, gave the hosts a 55-53 advantage, but the Braves knotted the score up at 55 apiece on a layup by Jacobs with 13 ticks remaining.

The Braves scored just 11 points on 22 percent shooting in the first half and went just 1-for-10 from the field in the final 12 minutes of the opening period. The Jaguars took a 28-11 lead on two free throws by Henry McCarthy with 38 seconds left before the break, but Daylan Fuller canned two free throws of his own with 11 seconds later to trim the deficit back to 15 points heading into the locker rooms.

UNCP will be back in action again on Saturday when it returns home to battle PBC East rival Flagler (8-10, 3-8) as part of Military Appreciation Day inside the English E. Jones Center. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
