PEMBROKE – Freshman Tyler Santee evened up the game in the 59th minute for the UNC Pembroke men's soccer team, but the visiting Flagler Saints pulled away with the victory by using a goal less than nine minutes later to take the 2-1 win over the Braves on Monday evening in Peach Belt Conference play at Varsity Grounds.
Despite dominate shooting by UNCP (5-7-2, 1-5-2 PBC) with a 13 shot advantage in the contest, the Saints (8-4-1, 7-2-0) logged six shots on goal compared to UNCP's four. Santee notched his second goal of the season and used the assist from Tom Potter for a header inside the box off the corner kick at the 58:05 mark.
Flagler's Jackie Kay used an assist by Johnny Cosgrove to register the first score of the contest in the 35th minute and enter into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Marco Warren collected the game-winner on a close range shot from Cosgrove on the cross pass to solidify the win.
Freshman Jordan Walshaw contributed a team-best seven shots, while Santee and Branco Theis added four. Seven other Braves tallied at least one shot to assist in UNCP's 24 total shots. Flagler was led by Cosgrove with three shots.
Potter attempted to put the Braves on the board in the first half, but was unable to connect after the shot hit the crossbar at the 21:25 mark. The Black and Gold nearly chipped in a shot in a seven second span as Walshaw, Josh Hanratty and Kelvin Sarkorh sent a trio of shots at the Saints' net, but came up empty in the 82nd minute.
Netminder Kenneth Perkinson picked up four saves in his complete game between the posts, while Lex Craggs was behind a trio of saves for Flagler in his 90 minutes of action.
The Saints were awarded all six yellow cards and a red along with totaling 22 fouls compared to UNCP's two yellow cards and 13 team fouls.
The Braves will compete in their last home game and regular season contest of the season on Wednesday as the Black and Gold hosts PBC opponent USC Aiken (5-4-3, 2-3-1 PBC) at Varsity Grounds at 7:30 p.m. Admission to all 2015 home soccer matches is free.
