MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Rae-Shawna Campbell's Equalizer in the 86th minute got the UNC Pembroke women's soccer team back into the game, but Haley Tidwell's score with six seconds left lifted fourth-seeded Georgia College past the fifth-seeded Braves in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday.
The Braves (8-9-1) saw their season end with the setback, despite a late regular season run that saw them go unbeaten in three of the final five outings. The Bobcats (10-7-2) will now head to the PBC Final Four in Evans, Ga., where they are slated to take on top-seeded and sixth-ranked Columbus State (16-2-1) in Saturday's semifinals.
Stacey Scott registered a game-best four shots to pace the offensive efforts for the Black & Gold, while Janae Aiken tallied nine saves between the pipes. Rahliat Animashaun tallied a goal and an assist to pace the hosts.
The teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock at the intermission, but Animashaun got her team off the mark just less than three minutes into the second half when she collected a quality feed from Unnbjorg Omarsdottir and fired a shot past Aiken at the 47:44 mark. The Braves created a myriad of opportunities for themselves over the next 25 minutes, including a phenomenal strike by Kate Weisner that hit the crossbar, but did not level up the game until the 86th minute (85:41) when Campbell knocked in a deflection off of a Georgia College defender.
The Bobcats put up four shots on goal in the final three minutes, but Aiken was up to the task on the first three opportunities.
