Wingate's Arc Shooting Too Much For Women's Basketball

WINGATE - An impressive 46.3 percent shooting from the field and 10 3-pointers allowed the Wingate Bulldogs to breeze past the visiting UNC Pembroke women's basketball team, 79-61, despite 18 foul shots and 31 points off the bench on Tuesday evening in the Cuddy Arena.

Wingate (2-1) used the victory to extend its winning-streak to two games this season, while UNCP (3-2) suffered its second loss in the last three games.

Junior Jasmine Huntley came off the bench for the Braves and tallied 15 points in her 27 minutes as she went 5-for-9 from the field and shot 71.4 percent from the charity stripe. Senior Mary Robinson added 11 points with a pair of UNCP's trio of arc shots and shared a team-high in rebounding with Jonissa Monley as they both picked up seven rebounds.

The Braves collected eight points off Wingate's 16 turnovers and controlled a seven point lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter. UNCP held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first four minutes of the game as UNCP opened up the contest with a 3-pointer by Airico Williams and a jumper by Phoenicia Lawson to take the 5-0 lead.

Wingate out-scored the Braves in the remaining three quarters as the Bulldogs controlled a nine-point advantage in the second period to hold off the Black and Gold for the win.

The Bulldogs had five players with double-digit scoring as Courtney Robinson led the squad with 14 points. Morgan McGee, Caroline Averette and Kristina Rumplasch had 10+ points, while Danasia Witherspoon was a rebound shy of a double-double as she logged 10 points and nine boards. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Braves, 47-38, and drained 19 second-chance points on 31 offensive rebounds.

The Braves return to Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court on Saturday as the squad debuts in Peach Belt Conference action against Lander (4-2, 0-0). Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. in the front half of a UNCP basketball doubleheader. Click HERE for ticket information.
