PEMBROKE – Defending national champion Daniel Ownbey turned in a pair of wins via technical fall, while Juan Stimpson picked up his fifth and sixth pins of the season, as the 20th-ranked UNC Pembroke wrestling team routed Ferrum (31-13) and Anderson (31-11) in the bookends of a quad meet on Saturday in the English E. Jones Center.
It was the 11th and 12th victories of the season for the Braves (12-3) who have now captured wins in 23 of their last 26 dual meets, including six-straight victories at home. Ferrum (7-8) fell to 0-3 all-time against the Braves. Anderson (10-16) dropped its ninth-straight match to the Black & Gold in the Battle for the Belt series. The Trojans have not gained possession of that traveling trophy since the 2005-06 season.
Ferrum won each of the first two matches of the day, including Robert Cunningham's 10-2 major decision over Josh Brown at 125 pounds, to grab an early 7-0 lead, but the Braves took seven of the last eight matches to ease past the Panthers. UNCP used Ownbey's 22-7 technical fall at 141 pounds, and an ensuing 9-6 decision by Hayden Fry in the 149-pound matchup to take the lead for good. Stimpson, Terrence Zaleski (technical fall) and Chris Giddens (pin) all recorded bonus point victories down the stretch for the hosts.
Anderson grabbed an early 7-0 lead in their matchup with the Braves as well, but UNCP, again, won seven of the days final eight bouts to fuel the runaway victory. Ownbey (technical fall) and Fry teamed up to give the Braves an 8-7 advantage after four matches, but the Trojans reclaimed the lead on Sean Turner's 12-4 major decision over Reggie Allen at 157 pounds. Stimpson's first-period (2:24) pin of Jared Costa would give the hosts the lead for good, however.
The Black & Gold tallied bonus-point victories in three of the final four matches, including a first-period (2:25) pin by Stuart Nadeau at 197 pounds, to ice the rout.
UNCP will be back in action again on Tuesday when it treks to central South Carolina to battle region nemesis and 16th-ranked Newberry (9-3) in a 7 p.m. dual meet inside Eleazer Arena.
